What is an AI friend app? A plain guide for 2026

What an AI friend app is, how the chats work, what it costs, and how to pick one that's safe, honest about being AI and kind to your privacy.

If you've searched "AI friend app" or "an AI I can just talk to", you've probably found a confusing mix of productivity bots, dating-style apps and tools that seem to want your credit card before you've said hello. This guide explains what an AI friend app actually is, how it works under the hood, what it can and can't do for you, and what to look for before you sign up, whether you live in the US, the UK, Canada, Australia or anywhere else.

The short answer

An AI friend app is a chat app where you text with an AI character that has a personality, interests and a consistent way of talking. Instead of asking it to write an email or summarise a document, you chat the way you would with a friend: about your day, a film you watched, a recipe you want to try, or the job interview you're nervous about.

The character isn't a person. A good app makes that obvious, with a clear "AI" label and regular reminders, and keeps the conversation friendly rather than romantic.

How does an AI friend app work?

Behind each character is a large language model (LLM), the same kind of technology behind general AI assistants. The app gives the model a description of the character (for example, "Olivia is a chef who loves turning leftovers into dinner") plus safety rules, then sends it your recent messages. The model writes the next reply in that character's voice.

  • Personality: each character has its own job, hobbies and tone, so chatting with a laid-back gamer feels different from chatting with a calm advice-giver.
  • Context: the app sends a window of recent messages so the character can follow the conversation.
  • Memory (optional): some apps let the character keep short notes about you, such as your name, your dog's name or your exam date, so later chats feel personal. On I Am Mate this is part of Plus, and you can read and delete the notes any time. We explain more in how AI chat memory works.
  • Safety layer: rules that keep the character honest about being AI, steer away from harmful topics and show crisis helplines when someone seems to be struggling.

What people use AI friends for

People use these apps for lots of small, everyday reasons:

  • Unwinding after work with a low-pressure chat that doesn't need a reply on anyone else's schedule.
  • Practising a language, especially English conversation, without feeling judged. See our guide to practising English with AI.
  • Thinking out loud about a decision, a plan or a hobby project.
  • Rehearsing a tricky conversation, a job interview or small talk.
  • Learning about a topic through a character who "works" in it: cooking, aviation, architecture, photography.
  • Company on a quiet evening, alongside (not instead of) the people in your life. We wrote more about this in feeling lonely: can an AI friend help?

What an AI friend is not

Being clear about limits is part of using these apps well:

  • Not a person. It doesn't have feelings, a life outside the chat or memories you didn't give it.
  • Not a therapist, doctor or lawyer. AI replies can be wrong or made up. Don't use them for medical, legal, financial or safety decisions. Read what a chatbot can and can't do for your mental health.
  • Not a crisis service. If you're in danger, call your local emergency number. In the US and Canada you can call or text 988; in the UK and Ireland, Samaritans are on 116 123; in Australia, Lifeline is 13 11 14; in New Zealand, call or text 1737.
  • Not a dating app. I Am Mate characters are friends only: no romance, flirting or adult content, for anyone.

How much do AI friend apps cost?

Most apps use a "freemium" model: a free tier with a daily message limit, and a paid plan with more messages and extra features. Typical paid plans in the US, UK, Canada and Australia sit somewhere between the price of a coffee and a streaming subscription each month.

On I Am Mate, a free account gives you 40 messages a day with all 20 built-in characters. Plus is $7.99 a month or $59 a year and adds 200 messages a day, long-term memory and up to 10 characters of your own. Prices are in US dollars; your bank converts them if you pay in pounds, Canadian or Australian dollars, or euros, and sales tax or VAT is added where it applies. You can cancel any time. Full details are on the pricing page and in our free vs. Plus guide.

How to choose a good AI friend app: a checklist

  1. Is it honest about being AI? Look for clear AI labels and reminders. Several US states now require them for companion chatbots; see what New York and California require.
  2. Does it have a published safety and crisis policy? A good app tells you what happens if you mention self-harm. Ours is on the safety page.
  3. What happens to your chats? Read the privacy policy. Can you download and delete everything? Are your chats sold or used for ads?
  4. Is it age-gated? Companion chatbots aren't suitable for everyone. I Am Mate is for adults 18 and over.
  5. Is the pricing clear? You should see the price, what you get and how to cancel before you pay.
  6. Does it keep things friendly? If an app pushes romance, paid "gifts" or guilt-trips you into staying, that's a red flag.

Getting started

Trying an AI friend app takes a minute. On I Am Mate you can sign in with Google or email, confirm you're 18 or over, pick a character and say hi. If you're not sure what to talk about, our list of things to talk about with an AI friend has plenty of openers.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a free AI friend app?

Yes. Many AI friend apps have a free tier. I Am Mate gives every free account 40 messages a day with all 20 built-in characters, with no card needed. Plus adds more messages, memory and your own characters.

Is talking to an AI friend weird?

No. Plenty of people chat with AI to unwind, practise a language or think out loud. It works best as one part of your social life, alongside friends, family and community, not as a replacement for them.

Can an AI friend remember me?

Some apps can keep short notes about you between chats. On I Am Mate, memory is part of Plus: each character saves a few short facts you mention, and you can read or delete them at any time.

Is an AI friend a real person?

No. Every reply is written by an AI model. Good apps label characters clearly and remind you regularly that you're talking to an AI.

Can I use an AI friend app if I'm under 18?

Not I Am Mate. It's for adults 18 and over, and we ask your age before your first chat. Companion chatbots may not be suitable for some minors.

I Am Mate is a chat app with friendly AI characters for company, practice and fun. Every character is an AI, not a person, and the app is for adults (18+). It's not a dating app, a therapist or a crisis service. If you're struggling, see our helplines.
