How to practise English conversation with AI: a 15-minute daily routine
16 October 2026 · 3 min read · By the I Am Mate team
A simple daily routine for practising English speaking and writing with an AI chat partner, with prompts, correction tips and how to prepare for life, work and study in the US, UK, Canada and Australia.
Moving to Toronto, studying in Sydney, starting a job in London or working with a team in New York? Textbook English and real conversational English are different things. An AI chat partner gives you unlimited, judgement-free practice at whatever hour suits you. Here's how to use one well.
Why practise with an AI?
- No embarrassment. Make mistakes freely. Nobody is waiting impatiently.
- Any time, any topic. Practise small talk before work or interview answers at midnight.
- Gentle corrections. Ask the AI to point out mistakes and suggest more natural phrasing.
- Real-life scenarios. Role-play ordering coffee, calling a landlord or chatting with a colleague.
On I Am Mate, Maya is a patient English practice partner who chats about anything and gently corrects your mistakes as you go. Every other character can help too: talk cooking with Olivia, travel with Chloe or careers with Ava.
The 15-minute daily routine
Minutes 1–3: Warm up with your day
Tell your AI partner three things about your day. Keep it simple: "This morning I took the bus to work. It was raining. I had a meeting about the new project."
Minutes 4–10: One real-life scenario
Pick a situation you'll actually face and ask the AI to role-play it. For example:
- "Pretend you're a barista in a busy London café. I'll order."
- "Be my new coworker in Chicago. Let's make small talk on Monday morning."
- "You're a landlord in Melbourne. I'm calling about a broken heater."
- "Ask me common job interview questions for a customer service role in Canada."
Minutes 11–13: Ask for feedback
Ask: "Which of my sentences sounded unnatural? How would a native speaker say them?" Write down two or three corrections.
Minutes 14–15: Reuse the new phrases
Write a short message using the corrected phrases. Repetition is what turns corrections into habits.
Useful prompts to copy
- "Please correct my mistakes, but only after I finish my message."
- "Use simple English (around B1 level) and ask me one question at a time."
- "Teach me three common phrasal verbs from our conversation."
- "What's the difference between how British, American and Australian people would say this?"
- "Give me a more polite way to say this for an email to my manager."
British, American, Canadian or Australian English?
All are correct, and people understand each other easily. The main differences are spelling (colour/color, practise/practice as a verb), some vocabulary (flat/apartment, lift/elevator, uni/college) and slang. If you're moving to a specific country, tell your AI partner and ask it to use that country's style.
Preparing for IELTS, TOEFL or Cambridge exams
AI chat is great for fluency and confidence, and for practising "speak for two minutes about…" style questions in writing. Ask it to give you a topic, write your answer, then ask for feedback on vocabulary range and linking words. For official band scores and exam rules, always use the exam provider's own materials.
Limits to keep in mind
An AI chat partner practises reading and writing; I Am Mate is text-only, so pair it with speaking out loud (read your messages aloud, or talk with people) to build pronunciation. AI corrections are usually helpful but not always perfect, so check anything important in a good dictionary.
Frequently asked questions
Can I practise English with AI for free?
Yes. I Am Mate's free account includes 40 messages a day with all 20 characters, including Maya, an English practice partner who gently corrects your mistakes.
Is AI good for learning English conversation?
It's very good for fluency, confidence, vocabulary and practising real-life situations, because you can chat any time without pressure. Combine it with speaking practice with people to improve pronunciation and listening.
How can I improve my English speaking at home?
Practise a little every day: chat with an AI partner, read your messages out loud, shadow podcasts or videos, and use new phrases in real conversations as soon as you can.
Will the AI correct my grammar?
If you ask it to. Try: "Please correct my mistakes after each message and explain briefly." Maya on I Am Mate does this by default.
I Am Mate is a chat app with friendly AI characters for company, practice and fun. Every character is an AI, not a person, and the app is for adults (18+). It's not a dating app, a therapist or a crisis service. If you're struggling, see our helplines.
