Maya: practise English conversation with a patient AI partner (IELTS, CELPIP, work and everyday chat)
17 October 2026 · 8 min read · By the I Am Mate team
Meet Maya, I Am Mate's English practice character. How she corrects you gently, a 20-minute daily plan, exam-style practice for IELTS, CELPIP, PTE and TOEFL, workplace small talk for the US, UK, Canada and Australia, and 40 prompts to try.
Maya is an AI character on I Am Mate who chats with you in everyday English and adds one short Tip: line when you make a mistake, with at most two fixes per message so you keep your confidence. Use her for 15–20 minutes a day: chat about real life, practise exam-style questions (IELTS, CELPIP, PTE, TOEFL), rehearse work conversations, and read your answers aloud before you send them. She's free to try and she is an AI, not a human tutor.
Most English learners don't need more grammar rules. They need more conversations: lots of low-pressure practice where it's fine to get things wrong. That's hard to find. Friends are busy, tutors cost money, and language-exchange apps can feel awkward or turn into dating apps.
Maya was built for exactly this gap. She's an AI character on I Am Mate who chats with you about anything, from your weekend to your job interview, and quietly helps you sound more natural as you go. This guide explains how she works, how to get the most out of her, and how to use her to prepare for real life in English-speaking countries.
Who is Maya?
Maya is a friendly language-exchange character. Her story is that she runs English conversation sessions, plans lessons, and hangs out at language cafés where people from everywhere meet to practise. She's patient, encouraging and curious about your life.
To be completely clear: Maya is an AI, not a person, and her photos are AI-generated. She'll tell you that herself if you ask. Being an AI has real benefits for practice: she never gets bored of your questions, she's there at 2am before an exam, and nobody is judging your accent or your typos.

How Maya corrects your English
Bad correction kills motivation. If every message comes back covered in red ink, you stop wanting to write. Maya follows three simple rules:
- She answers you first. Maya replies to what you actually said, like a friend would, before mentioning any mistake. The conversation always comes first.
- One short "Tip:" line. If you made a mistake, she adds a single line at the end with the corrected sentence.
- No more than two fixes per message. She picks the mistakes that matter most and lets small things go, so you're never overwhelmed.
Here's what that looks like:
Yesterday I go to the cinema with my colleague and we watched a horror film, I was very scaring 😅
Haha a horror film after work is brave! What was it called? Did your colleague scream more than you? 😄
Tip: "Yesterday I went to the cinema… I was very scared." (Scary things are scaring; you feel scared.)
Maya also adjusts to your level. If your English is basic, she uses short sentences and common words. As you improve, she uses richer vocabulary and idioms, and she'll explain any word you don't know if you ask.
Writing in your own language? If you message Maya in Urdu, Hindi, Spanish, Arabic or another language, she'll just chat with you in that language, with no corrections. Switch to English whenever you're ready to practise, or ask her directly: "Can you help me say this in English?"
A 20-minute daily routine that actually works
Consistency beats intensity. Twenty minutes every day will do more for your fluency than a three-hour session once a week. Here's a simple structure:
| Time | What to do | Why it helps |
|---|---|---|
| 5 min | Tell Maya about your day or something you're planning. | Builds everyday vocabulary and past/future tenses. |
| 5 min | Ask her about one word or phrase you heard this week. | Turns passive vocabulary into words you can use. |
| 5 min | Practise one "real situation" (see the list below). | Prepares you for conversations that make you nervous. |
| 5 min | Read your last three messages out loud, using Maya's corrections. | Connects writing to speaking, so the correct version comes out of your mouth. |
That last step is important. Chatting with Maya is typed, not spoken, so make speaking part of the routine yourself. Reading corrected sentences aloud is one of the fastest ways to make them automatic. For a longer version of this routine, see our guide on how to practise English conversation with AI.
Practising for real life in English-speaking countries
If you're living in, moving to or working with people in the US, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand or Ireland, the hardest English is often not "textbook" English. It's the quick, casual stuff. Ask Maya to role-play any of these:
Small talk at work
- Monday-morning chat: "How was your weekend?" and how to answer in more than one word.
- Talking about the weather (a national sport in the UK and Ireland).
- Joining a conversation at lunch or in the break room without feeling awkward.
- Polite ways to disagree in a meeting: "I see your point, but…", "Could we look at it another way?"
Everyday errands
- Ordering coffee in the US (sizes, milk options, "for here or to go?") versus the UK ("eat in or take away?").
- Calling a doctor's office or GP surgery to book an appointment.
- Talking to a landlord about a repair, or asking a neighbour for a favour.
- Returning something to a shop and explaining what's wrong.
Job hunting
- Answering "Tell me about yourself" in two minutes.
- Behavioural questions like "Tell me about a time you solved a problem" using the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result).
- Writing a short, polite follow-up email after an interview.
Just start with something like: "Maya, can we role-play? You're my manager and I need to ask for Friday off." When you finish, ask her: "What could I have said more naturally?"

Using Maya to prepare for IELTS, CELPIP, PTE or TOEFL
Many people learning English are working towards a test for study, work or immigration. Maya isn't an official exam tutor and can't give you a real score, but she's a great way to get lots of practice answering exam-style questions and to build the vocabulary those tests reward.
| Test | Often used for | How to practise with Maya |
|---|---|---|
| IELTS (Academic / General) | UK, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Ireland: study, work and visas | Ask her for Part 1 questions about home, work and hobbies, a Part 2 "cue card" topic, then a Part 3 discussion on the same theme. |
| CELPIP General | Canada: permanent residence and citizenship | Practise everyday tasks: giving advice, describing a scene, comparing two options and persuading someone. |
| PTE Academic | Australia, New Zealand, UK: study and visas | Practise clear, well-structured answers and summarising short texts in your own words. |
| TOEFL iBT | US universities and many others | Practise giving an opinion with two reasons and an example, and explaining a short reading in your own words. |
Good exam-practice prompts:
- "Give me an IELTS Part 2 topic. I'll write my answer, then tell me which words I could upgrade."
- "Ask me five Part 1 questions, one at a time, and correct only my biggest mistake each time."
- "I need to persuade my neighbour to join a community clean-up. Play my neighbour and push back a little."
- "Give me 10 phrases for giving opinions that sound natural, not memorised."
Always check the official test website for the current format, timing and scoring before your exam. Formats change, and the official practice materials are the best guide to what you'll see on the day.

What Maya won't do
- Pretend to be human. She's an AI character and says so when asked.
- Flirt or role-play dating. I Am Mate is a friendly, non-romantic app. Practise ordering coffee, not romance.
- Write your exam for you or guarantee a score. She helps you practise; your test result depends on the real exam.
- Replace speaking practice entirely. Use her for daily practice and confidence, and combine it with speaking aloud and, if you can, real conversations with people.
Start chatting with Maya
- Open I Am Mate and pick Maya. You can start as a guest; a free account saves your chats on every device.
- Tell her your level and your goal, for example: "I'm intermediate and I have an IELTS exam in March."
- Chat a little every day. With Plus, Maya also keeps long-term memory notes, so she can remember your goal, your exam date and the mistakes you're working on.

Frequently asked questions
Can I practise English with AI for free?
Yes. You can chat with Maya on I Am Mate without paying or adding a card. A free account gives you a few messages every day, and Plus adds more daily messages and long-term memory.
Does Maya correct every mistake?
No, on purpose. She replies to what you said first, then adds one short "Tip:" line with at most two corrections, choosing the mistakes that matter most so you stay confident and keep talking.
Can Maya help me prepare for IELTS or CELPIP speaking?
She can give you exam-style questions, help you build answers and suggest better vocabulary. She isn't an official examiner and can't give an official band or score, so use the official practice materials too.
Is chatting by text good practice for speaking?
Typing helps you build vocabulary and sentence patterns without pressure. To turn it into speaking skill, read your corrected messages out loud and use phrases from the chat in real conversations.
Is Maya a real teacher?
No. Maya is an AI character, not a human or a certified teacher, and her photos are AI-generated. She's a friendly practice partner you can chat with any time.
Will Maya speak my language?
Yes. If you write in another language, she'll chat in that language without corrections. When you want English practice, just switch to English or ask her for help.
