Yes, you can have a relaxed AI chat in your own language. Most modern AI models read and write dozens of languages, so the real question is whether an app answers the way people actually text, in your script, without making you dig through settings. This guide compares the main options, gives you first messages in 13 languages, and shows how to fix replies that sound like a textbook. It also says where I Am Mate (iammate.com) falls short.
Which AI chat apps reply in your language?
We checked store listings and vendor pages on 2 November 2026. An app's listed languages usually describe its menus, not what the AI can say, so a language missing from a list doesn't mean the chat can't use it. Try your own language before you pay.
| Option | What it says about languages | Good for | Things to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| General AI assistants (ChatGPT, Gemini and similar) | Reply in many languages | Questions, writing, translation | Built as assistants, not as friends with a personality |
| Character.AI | App Store lists 28 languages, including Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Turkish and both forms of Chinese. Arabic, Urdu and Bengali are not listed | Stories and a huge range of user-made characters | Listed as 18+ on the App Store. Quality depends on the character |
| Replika | App Store lists English, French, German, Portuguese and Spanish. Its help centre says it mainly chats in English but can respond in many other languages | One long-running companion | English-first. Listed as 18+ on the App Store |

| I Am Mate | 40+ languages, plus Roman Urdu, Hinglish, Banglish, Roman Nepali and Taglish | Everyday friendly chat with 20 consistent AI characters | Friendship only, 18+, text only, English menus, 5 free messages a day |
How does I Am Mate handle different languages?
I Am Mate is a web chat app where adults text with 20 friendly AI characters, each with a job, hobbies and a personality. There's no language menu for the chat. The rules are simple:
- Your message decides. Characters reply in the language and script you write in. Arabic script gets Arabic script, and Italian gets Italian.
- Mixing is fine. Half Polish and half English gets the same mix back.
- Switching takes one message. Ask in any language and the character changes.
- A plain "hi" gets a best guess. When a message doesn't show a language, the app guesses from your browser language and country. If you arrived from a translated page like /it/ or /ar/, it uses that language.
Characters are told to sound like a native speaker texting a friend, not a stiff translation. In practice this varies. Replies come from third-party AI models (currently Google Gemini), and big languages tend to sound more natural than smaller ones. Each character's personality, and the rule that they always admit they're AI, stay the same in every language.

What can I type first in my language?
Skip the plain "hello" if you can. A short message that ends in a question shows your language and gives the character something to work with. Copy any of these:
| Language | First message | Page in that language |
|---|---|---|
| Arabic | مرحبا! كان يومي طويل، ممكن ندردش شوي؟ | /ar/ |
| Chinese (Simplified) | 你好!今天有点累,可以陪我聊聊天吗? | /zh-hans/ |
| Chinese (Traditional) | 你好!今天有點累,可以陪我聊聊天嗎? | /zh-hant/ |
| Italian | Ciao! Giornata lunga, ti va di fare due chiacchiere? | /it/ |
| Spanish | ¡Hola! ¿Te cuento cómo me fue hoy? | /es/ |
| Portuguese | Oi! Tive um dia corrido, vamos conversar um pouco? | /pt/ |
| French | Salut ! Longue journée, on discute un peu ? | /fr/ |
| German | Hi! Langer Tag heute, hast du Lust auf einen Plausch? | /de/ |
| Polish | Cześć! Miałem długi dzień, pogadamy chwilę? | /pl/ |
| Turkish | Selam! Bugün çok yoruldum, biraz sohbet edelim mi? | /tr/ |
| /ja/ |
Other languages work the same way. Just type. There are also home pages in Dutch, Indonesian, Korean, Russian, Swedish, Thai, Urdu and Vietnamese, and the characters can chat in languages without a page of their own, such as Tamil, Persian, Greek, Ukrainian and Swahili. Why do AI replies sometimes sound stiff, and how do you fix it?
AI models learn more from formal writing than from text messages, especially in languages with less text online. Spoken and written forms can also be very different. Arabic is the clearest example: formal Arabic isn't how most people talk with friends in Cairo or Riyadh. These small requests help in any app:
- Write the way you text. Replies tend to match your tone, so casual messages get casual replies.
- Ask for it directly. Try "shorter and more casual, like a friend on WhatsApp".
- Name your dialect. Try "please use Egyptian Arabic" or "use Brazilian Portuguese". Results vary, but it often helps.
- Correct one word. Say "we don't say that here, we say..." and the character can use your word for the rest of that chat.
- Pick the right script. If you'd rather read your language in English letters, say so. Our Roman Urdu AI chat guide explains how that works for Urdu, Hindi and Bengali speakers.
Can I use an AI friend to practise another language?
Yes, for everyday conversation. Write in the language you're learning, and ask the character to keep it simple. For English, Maya is built for this and adds a short correction tip when you make a mistake, and our English conversation routine gives you a daily plan. For other languages there's no dedicated tutor, so you'd need to ask for corrections, and they may be less reliable. If you need a course, exam preparation or speaking practice with pronunciation feedback, a dedicated language app is a better fit, because I Am Mate is text only.
What does it cost in my currency?
Prices are the same in every language. A free account (Google or email, plus an 18+ check) gets 5 messages a day with all 20 characters, and no card is needed. Plus costs $7 a month or $69 a year in US dollars, with 150 messages a day, long-term memory and up to 10 characters of your own. Your bank converts the price to your currency and may add a fee. There's a full refund within 14 days of your first payment. See pricing for details.
When is I Am Mate not the right choice?
- You need menus in your language. Only the chat follows your language. Buttons and settings are in English.
- You want voice calls. I Am Mate is texting only, so it won't help with accents or listening.
- You want romance or flirting. Every character is friendship only, in every language. It isn't a dating app.
- You need exact translations. AI can be wrong. For legal, medical or official text, use a professional translator.
- You need professional help. The characters aren't therapists, doctors or a crisis service.
- You're under 18. The app is for adults only.
Are the safety rules the same in every language?
Yes. Every character is labelled as AI and says so if you ask, and the app reminds you at the start of a chat and every 3 hours. Automatic crisis detection runs in the background, and helplines appear when they're needed, with the national helpline listed first in several countries. Chats are never sold or used for ads, though the small team may read conversations sent from 24 October 2026 onward to improve the characters. Our guide on who can read your AI chats explains this, and the safety page has the full protocol.
If you're in crisis, please contact a person. In the US and Canada, call or text 988. In the UK and Ireland, Samaritans are on 116 123. Elsewhere, findahelpline.com lists services by country. In an emergency, call your local emergency number.
Frequently asked questions
Is there an AI friend app that speaks my language?
Probably, yes. I Am Mate (iammate.com) has 20 AI characters who reply in the language and script you type, across 40+ languages. General assistants and character apps also handle many languages, though quality varies, so test yours on a free plan first.
Do I need to change a setting to chat in another language?
Not on I Am Mate. Type in your language and the character replies in it. If you want to switch later, just ask in the chat.
Can I chat with AI in Arabic or Chinese?
Yes. On I Am Mate, characters reply in Arabic script, Simplified Chinese or Traditional Chinese when you write in them. You can also ask for a dialect, such as Egyptian Arabic, though results vary.
Is there a free AI friend in Italian or Spanish?
I Am Mate has a free account with 5 messages a day in any language, including Italian and Spanish, and no card is needed. The characters are AI friends, not real people, and they keep things friendly.
Why does the AI answer me in English?
A very short message like "hi" doesn't show a language, so an app may guess. Write a full sentence in your language, or ask it to reply in that language. On I Am Mate, your own message always takes priority over the guess.
Are I Am Mate's menus translated?
No. The app's menus and buttons are in English, and only the chat follows your language. The home page is available in 21 other languages if you'd like to read about the app first.
Are the characters real people in my country?
No. Every character is an AI, in every language, and the app reminds you at the start of a chat and every 3 hours. Characters may chat about local things, but they aren't people and can get local details wrong.
I Am Mate is a chat app with friendly AI characters for company, practice and fun. Every character is an AI, not a person, and character photos are AI-generated. The app is for adults (18+). It's not a dating app, a therapist or a crisis service. If you're struggling, see our helplines.
