Quick answer

If you need someone to talk to at night, match the option to how you feel. In danger or distress: call or text 988 (US and Canada) or call Samaritans on 116 123 (UK and Ireland), both open 24/7. Just awake and alone: try a warmline, message a friend for tomorrow, or have a short chat with an AI friend such as I Am Mate (iammate.com), then put the phone down.

It's 3am, the house is quiet, and the thoughts are loud. If you've searched for someone to talk to at night, the right answer depends on how you're feeling. You might be in real distress. You might only be awake, bored and a bit alone. Those two nights need different things, so this guide starts by separating them.

If you are thinking about hurting yourself or you are in danger, please stop reading and contact someone now. In the US and Canada, call or text 988. In the UK and Ireland, call Samaritans free on 116 123. In Australia, call Lifeline on 13 11 14. In New Zealand, call or text 1737. In an emergency, call your local emergency number. In other countries, findahelpline.com lists local services.

Who can you talk to at night?

Here are the main options, from most serious need to least:

Crisis lines (988, Samaritans)Distress, feeling unsafe, or needing a person right nowFreeBusy times can mean a wait
US warmlinesWanting a real person to listen when it isn't an emergencyFreeMany run 24/7, but some keep set hours
A friend or relativeBeing known by someone who cares about youFreeThey may be asleep, so agree a "call me anytime" deal in advance

An AI friend or chatbotUnwinding, getting thoughts out, light companyFree plans, often with limitsIt isn't a person or a crisis service, and it keeps you on a screen

Can you call a helpline if you aren't suicidal?

Yes. People often assume these lines are only for the worst moment of their life, and they aren't. Samaritans says it's there for anyone struggling to cope and lists loneliness, relationship problems, money worries and bereavement among the reasons people call. The 988 Lifeline says its counsellors help with emotional distress or a need to talk with someone, by call, text or chat, around the clock.

What is a warmline?

A warmline is a free, confidential phone line for conversation and support, usually answered by trained peers who have been through mental health struggles themselves. Mental Health America describes them as being for talking things through, while crisis lines focus on keeping you safe in the moment. Many are open 24/7, others keep set hours, and hours are listed in the line's local time. In the US you can find one in the warmline.org directory.

Can an AI friend help when you can't sleep?

A little, in the moment, and it's worth being exact about that. A Harvard Business School study published in the Journal of Consumer Research found that a 15-minute chat with an AI companion eased loneliness about as much as a chat with a human stranger, while watching YouTube had no effect. The more people felt heard, the better it worked. But the relief didn't build up over a week of daily chats. The lead researcher compared loneliness to hunger: it comes back.

A 2025 pair of studies by OpenAI and the MIT Media Lab adds a warning. Across 981 people in a four-week trial, higher daily use of ChatGPT went along with more loneliness, more dependence and less time with people. That is a link, not proof of cause, and lonely people may simply use chatbots more. Still, the pattern fits common sense: a short chat can settle you, and a nightly habit that replaces people probably won't.

What AI chat is good for at night:

  • Getting the loop out of your head. Typing out what's on your mind can make it feel smaller.
  • Light distraction. A silly debate about pizza toppings beats replaying an awkward meeting.
  • Company on a night shift. Quiet hours at work are easier with someone to swap a few messages with.
  • Preparing for tomorrow. Rehearse the hard conversation, then write down one thing you'll do.

What it can't do: notice that you've gone quiet, sit with you, or keep you safe. For more on those limits, read AI chatbot vs. therapist.

Won't a phone keep you awake?

It can, so here's the honest trade-off. The NHS advises against using smartphones and other devices right before bed because their light can keep you awake. So an AI chat is not a sleep aid, and I Am Mate is no exception. If your problem is mainly sleep, the phone may be part of it.

What sleep clinics commonly suggest instead: if you've been lying awake for about 15 to 20 minutes, get up, go to another room, keep the lights low and do something quiet until you feel sleepy. That's Mayo Clinic's guidance, and it's a standard part of cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia. Pick your quiet activity in advance, such as a paper book or gentle music. The NHS suggests seeing a GP if changing your habits hasn't helped, you've had trouble sleeping for months, or it's making daily life hard to cope with. This is general information, not medical advice.

If you do chat at night, a simple rule helps: dim the screen, set a limit of ten minutes, and say goodnight on purpose.

What should you say at 3am?

You don't need a good opening line. These work with a friend, and with an AI character:

  • "I can't sleep and I don't really know why. Can we talk for ten minutes?"
  • "Something's been going round my head all night. Can I just type it out?"
  • "Distract me. Tell me something interesting about your job."
  • "I've got a hard conversation tomorrow. Can we practise it once, then I'll go to bed?"
  • "Help me write down three things to deal with in the morning, so I can stop thinking about them tonight."

Which AI chat apps can you use at night?

Any chat app works at 3am, so the real question is what kind of conversation you want:

  • General assistants such as ChatGPT are useful for sorting out a problem or writing things down. They aren't built around one friendly character.
  • Character apps such as Talkie describe themselves as AI character chat and roleplay. When we checked Talkie's site, many listed characters had romantic or sexual storylines, which may not be what you want when you're low.
  • Pi (pi.ai) is often mentioned as a kind, chatty AI. Its site didn't let us check it today, and one third-party report says development has slowed, so see how it works for you.
  • I Am Mate (iammate.com) is a friendship-only web chat for adults 18+. It has 20 AI characters, each with a job and hobbies, and every one is labelled as AI. There's no romance mode and no download.

On I Am Mate, Grace is an ER nurse character with night-shift stories (she'll point you to a real doctor for real health questions), Linda is calm and good for big-picture talks, and Jennifer is an easy book chat. Leo is a music producer who's up late too. They reply in the language you write in, in 40+ languages, including Urdu, Hindi and Arabic, plus mixes such as Roman Urdu and Hinglish.

Characters are instructed not to encourage dependence, not to guilt you for leaving, and to cheer on your real friendships. If you mention self-harm or danger, the app shows crisis helplines, as explained on our safety page.

When is I Am Mate not the right choice at night?

  • You're in crisis. It isn't a crisis service. Use the numbers at the top of this page.
  • You want a voice. It's text only, so a warmline or a friend is better if you want to hear someone.
  • You want long free chats. The free plan is 5 messages a day. Plus gives you 150 a day for $7 a month or $69 a year.
  • You want complete privacy. Chats are never sold or used for ads, but our small team may read conversations sent from 24 October 2026 onward to improve the characters. See who can read your AI chats.
  • You want treatment. A doctor or licensed therapist can help in ways an app can't.

What helps with lonely nights in the long run?

  1. Make a "call me anytime" deal with one person, and offer them the same.
  2. Write down your night plan while you feel fine: who to contact, what to do and which numbers to call.
  3. Put something regular in your week. Seeing the same faces is how people become friends. Our guide to making friends in a new city has a first-month plan that works anywhere.
  4. Tell someone if the nights are getting heavier. Weeks of low mood or lost sleep are worth raising with a doctor.

If what you need tonight is light company rather than urgent help, you can try I Am Mate free with a Google or email account. It's for adults 18 and over, and it needs no card. Say hello, keep it short, and get some rest.

Frequently asked questions

Who can I talk to at 3am for free?

In the US and Canada, you can call or text 988 at any hour. In the UK and Ireland, Samaritans answers on 116 123, day and night. US warmlines are free for non-emergency conversation, though some keep set hours. An AI chat app can offer light company, but it isn't a person or a crisis service.

Can I talk to someone if I'm just lonely, not in crisis?

Yes. Samaritans lists loneliness among the reasons people call, and the 988 Lifeline says it helps people who need to talk. You don't have to justify your call. Warmlines are built for exactly this kind of conversation.

Is it OK to talk to an AI when I can't sleep?

A short chat is fine for most people, and studies suggest it can ease loneliness in the moment. It won't help you sleep, because phone light can keep you awake. If you're relying on it every night or feeling worse afterwards, take a break and talk to someone you trust.

Why do I feel lonelier at night?

Night takes away the distractions of the day. Other people are asleep, so there are fewer ways to reach anyone, and worries have more room. If it happens most nights or your mood stays low, it's worth talking to a doctor.

Is there an AI I can talk to 24 hours a day?

Yes. AI chat apps work at any hour, including I Am Mate (iammate.com), though free plans usually limit your messages. I Am Mate's free plan gives adults 5 messages a day with 20 AI characters. It's friendship only and always says it's AI.

Can an AI chatbot help in a crisis?

No, please don't rely on one. A responsible app shows helplines when you mention self-harm or danger, and I Am Mate does this automatically, but it can't keep you safe. Contact a crisis line or your local emergency number.

What can I do instead of lying awake?

Mayo Clinic suggests getting up after about 15 to 20 minutes awake, going to another room, keeping the lights low and doing something quiet until you feel sleepy. If poor sleep goes on for months or makes daily life hard, see a doctor.

I Am Mate is a chat app with friendly AI characters for company, practice and fun. Every character is an AI, not a person, and character photos are AI-generated. The app is for adults (18+). It's not a dating app, a therapist or a crisis service. If you're struggling, see our helplines.
