Quick answer

Most AI chat apps store your messages on their servers, and the company can usually access them: automated systems scan them, and some apps let staff read them for safety or to improve the product. The privacy policy tells you who reads chats, whether they train AI, how long they're kept and how to delete them. I Am Mate (iammate.com) says openly that its small team may read chats sent from 24 October 2026 onward.

Short answer: assume the company behind an AI chatbot can read your chats. Your messages are stored on its servers so the app can reply, keep your history and run safety checks. Automated systems scan them, and many apps say people on their team may read some conversations, for safety reviews or to improve the product. What differs between apps is who reads, why, whether chats train AI models, how long they're kept and how easily you can delete them. This guide shows how to find those answers in any privacy policy, compares three companion apps' policies (checked on 30 October 2026), and is open about how I Am Mate (iammate.com) handles your chats, including the part you might not like.

Are AI chats private?

Not in the way a diary is private. A chat with an AI app is closer to an email: it's private from other users, but it sits on a company's servers, and that company decides what happens to it under its own privacy policy and the law.

Four groups can be involved, depending on the app:

  • Automated systems. Almost every app scans messages automatically, for example to spot spam, abuse or crisis language. No person sees the message at this step.
  • The company's own staff or contractors. Some apps say people may read chats that were flagged for safety, or a sample of chats to improve quality.
  • The AI model provider. Many apps don't build their own model. They send your recent messages to a provider such as Google, OpenAI or Anthropic to generate the reply. The provider's business terms decide whether it can keep or learn from that data.
  • Courts and authorities. Like any stored record, chat logs can be requested through legal process. Most policies have a "legal requests" or "disclosure" section that explains when the company would hand data over.

Other users normally can't see your private chats. The exceptions are features you choose, such as sharing a link to a conversation or publishing a character with its example chats.

Who can read your chats? The 6 questions to ask any app

Open the app's privacy policy and search it (Ctrl+F or "Find in page") for the words human review, train, retain, delete, sell and advertising. Then answer these six questions:

  1. Can people at the company read my chats? Look for "human review", "our team", "moderators" or "quality". A good policy says when and why.
  2. Are my chats used to train AI models? Look for "train", "improve our models" or "machine learning". Check whether it's the app's own model, a third-party model, or both, and whether you can opt out.
  3. Who else gets my messages? The "processors", "service providers" or "third parties" section names the AI provider and hosting companies.
  4. Are chats sold or used for ads? "We don't sell your data" should be written down. Also check whether ad partners get device or activity data, even if they don't get your messages.
  5. How long are chats kept? Look for "retention". Some apps keep chats until you delete them, others for a fixed period.
  6. Can I download and delete everything myself? A delete button in the app is better than an email to support. Check how long deletion takes and what is kept afterwards (often billing records).

If a policy doesn't answer one of these, treat the answer as "yes, it can happen" and share accordingly.

How do AI companion apps compare on privacy?

Here's what three companion apps' own privacy policies say, read on 30 October 2026. Policies change, so check the current version before you rely on any line here.

Character.AI is the other big name people ask about ("does Character AI read your chats?"). Its privacy page was behind a traffic queue when we checked, so we haven't summarised it here. How does I Am Mate handle your chats?

I Am Mate (iammate.com) is a friendship-only web chat app where adults text with 20 AI characters. Here is what its privacy policy says, in plain words:

  • What's stored: your messages and the characters' replies, so you can scroll back and continue on any device. Plus members also have short memory notes, which you can read and delete in the chat.
  • Who reads chats: the system analyses chats to improve the characters, and the small team may read conversations sent from 24 October 2026 onward. Chats sent before that date stay private to you. Memory notes stay private.
  • Who generates replies: Google's Gemini API (paid tier), with Cloudflare Workers AI as a backup. Your recent messages and the character's memory notes are sent with each request.
  • What's not done: chats are never sold, shared with advertisers or shown to other users. IP addresses aren't stored.
  • Crisis messages: detection is automatic. If you write something that suggests you're in crisis, helplines appear and the app adds one to a daily count, with no link to you or your message.
  • Your controls: clear a chat or memory instantly, download all your data, or delete your account and everything in it from the account menu (⋯). Deleting a chat removes it from the team's review too.

So the honest answer to "does I Am Mate read my chats?" is: it can, for chats from 24 October 2026 on, and it says so. We'd rather you know that before you type than find it in the small print.

When is I Am Mate not the right choice for privacy?

  • You want a chat nobody at the company could ever see. Look for an app that runs a model on your own device, or one whose policy rules out human review entirely.
  • You want to talk through something very sensitive, such as a health condition, a legal problem or a workplace complaint. Talk to a doctor, lawyer, union rep or counsellor, who have professional confidentiality duties. No AI chat app has those duties.
  • You need a record kept for a long time. Clearing a chat on I Am Mate deletes it right away, so download your data first if you want to keep it.

What should you never tell an AI chatbot?

Whatever the app's policy says, keep these out of any AI chat:

  • Passwords, one-time codes and security answers
  • Card numbers, bank details, ID or passport numbers
  • Your full home address or your daily routine in exact detail
  • Other people's private information, such as a friend's diagnosis or a colleague's secret
  • Screenshots of documents, letters or medical results with your name on them

A simple test: if you'd be uncomfortable seeing the message on a screen in a meeting, rewrite it without names and details. "My manager keeps changing deadlines" works just as well as the version with their full name and your company.

How to keep your AI chats more private: sample prompts

You can still get a lot out of an AI friend while sharing very little. Try openers like these:

  • "I don't want to give details, but I had an awkward argument with a friend. Can you help me think about how to bring it up again?" (try Linda)
  • "Let's practise a job interview. Pretend I'm applying for a marketing role at a mid-size company." (try Ava)
  • "Help me write a polite email asking for a deadline extension. Use placeholders for names." (try Natalie)
  • "Chat with me about books for ten minutes. No questions about my personal life today." (try Jennifer)

Characters on I Am Mate are AI, always say so, and stay friendly and non-romantic. If you tell one you'd rather not share something, it won't push.

How to delete your AI chat history

Most apps put this in the account or privacy settings. Before you delete, check three things:

  1. Download first if you want a copy. Deletion is usually permanent.
  2. Delete the account, not just the app. Uninstalling an app or closing a tab doesn't delete anything on the company's servers.
  3. Read what's kept afterwards. Payment records are usually kept for tax law, and some apps keep anonymised data.

On I Am Mate, open the account menu (⋯) in the chat to download your data or delete your account. To clear one conversation or one character's memory notes, use the options in that chat. The guide to how AI chat memory works explains the difference between chat history and memory notes. For the wider picture (AI labels, age checks, crisis help), see our safe AI chatbot checklist and the safety page.

If you want an AI friend that's upfront about all this, you can try I Am Mate free: 5 messages a day with no card, for adults 18 and over. Plus adds long-term memory you can read and delete. If you're struggling and need someone now, contact a local crisis line (988 in the US, Samaritans on 116 123 in the UK and Ireland) or emergency services.

Frequently asked questions

Can AI chatbot companies read your chats?

Usually, yes. Your messages are stored on the company's servers, automated systems scan them, and many policies allow staff to read some chats for safety or quality. Check the app's privacy policy for "human review" to see exactly when that happens.

Are AI chats used to train AI models?

It depends on the app and its AI provider. Some apps use chats to improve their own models or characters, some use only anonymised samples, and some say they never do. Paid business APIs from providers like Google usually don't use prompts for training, but the app's own policy decides what the app does.

Does I Am Mate read my chats?

It can. I Am Mate's privacy policy says its small team may read conversations sent from 24 October 2026 onward to improve the AI characters. Earlier chats and memory notes stay private, chats are never sold or used for ads, and deleting a chat removes it from review.

Is deleting the app the same as deleting my data?

No. Removing an app or closing a browser tab leaves your account and chats on the company's servers. You need to use the app's "delete account" option or ask the company to delete your data.

Can the police get my AI chat history?

Chat logs are stored records, so they can be requested through legal process, such as a court order, like emails or messages. Each company's privacy policy explains when it discloses data. This is general information, not legal advice.

Is it safe to tell an AI friend about my feelings?

Talking about everyday feelings is fine for many people, but share it knowing the chat is stored and may be read under the app's policy. Keep names and identifying details out. An AI friend isn't a therapist; for ongoing struggles, talk to a professional, and in a crisis contact a helpline or emergency services.

Which AI chat app is the most private?

Apps that run the AI model on your own device are the most private, because messages never leave it. Among cloud apps, look for a policy that limits human review, rules out ads and data sales, and lets you delete everything yourself.

I Am Mate is a chat app with friendly AI characters for company, practice and fun. Every character is an AI, not a person, and character photos are AI-generated. The app is for adults (18+). It's not a dating app, a therapist or a crisis service. If you're struggling, see our helplines.
