Privacy policy
Last updated 12 October 2026
I Am Mate is run by its owner (), "we". This policy explains what we collect when you use the app and why. In short: we keep what's needed to run your chats, we don't sell anything, and you can download or delete it all at any time.
What we collect
- Your chats. The messages you send and the characters' replies, so you can scroll back and so characters have context. Stored in our database (Cloudflare D1).
- Memory notes (Plus). Short notes the AI writes about you so later chats feel personal. You can read and delete them in the chat.
- Characters you create (Plus). Their name, description and first message.
- Account details if you sign in: your email, display name and sign-in method, from Google Firebase Authentication. We never see your password.
- Your profile: your gender and birth year, which you tell us once after signing in. We use your date of birth only to check you're 18 or older and keep just the year. Your friends use your gender and age to talk to you naturally.
- Usage counts: how many messages you sent each day (for daily limits) and how many AI tokens they used (for our costs).
- Notifications. Account news we show in the app (welcome, Plus starting or ending, announcements). If you turn on push notifications, a device token from Firebase Cloud Messaging so we can reach that browser. Turning push off or signing out deletes the token.
- Billing if you buy Plus: subscription status, renewal date and the email you paid with, from our payment provider. Card details go to our payment provider only.
We do not store your IP address, run ads, or sell data. Analytics only runs if you allow it (see below). If you write something that suggests you're in crisis, we only add one to a daily count with no link to you or your message.
Who processes your data
- Google (Gemini API) generates replies. Your recent messages and the character's memory notes are sent with each request. We use the paid API, where Google doesn't use prompts to improve its products.
- Cloudflare hosts the app and database and can generate replies with Workers AI when Gemini is unavailable.
- Google Firebase handles sign-in, delivers push notifications if you turn them on (Cloud Messaging), and, only if you allow it, measures visits (Google Analytics for Firebase).
- our payment provider (merchant of record) handles payments and tax.
These providers may process data outside your country, including in the United States, under their standard data protection terms.
Who can see your chats
Only you. Our admin tools show counts and billing status, never chat text or memory notes. We'd only look at a conversation if you ask us to (for example to investigate a report) or if the law requires it.
How long we keep it
- Account data stays until you delete it. Clearing a chat or memory deletes it right away.
- Billing records are kept by our payment provider for as long as tax law requires.
Your rights and choices
In the chat, open the account menu (⋯) to download all your data as a file or delete your account and everything in it. You can also ask us for access, correction or deletion, or object to processing: see the contact page. If you're in the EU/UK you may complain to your data protection authority.
Cookies and storage
One essential cookie keeps you signed in. Your browser also remembers your light/dark choice and your analytics choice. Signing in with Google loads Google's sign-in script for that moment.
Analytics
If you press "Allow" on the banner, Google Analytics for Firebase counts page views and a few actions (for example signing up, opening a character's chat, sending a message, starting checkout) and sets its own cookies. It never receives your messages, the characters' replies, your memory notes, your email or anything about crisis messages. Google Signals and ad personalisation are switched off. Google Analytics doesn't log or store IP addresses. If you don't allow it, nothing is loaded.

Adults only
The app isn't for anyone under 18. If we learn an account belongs to a minor, we delete it.
Changes
If we change this policy in a way that matters, we'll update the date above and tell signed-in users in the app.
