Quick answer

A safe AI chatbot for adults is clearly labelled as AI, checks that you're 18 or older, shows crisis helplines when someone is struggling, explains who can read your chats and lets you delete them. I Am Mate (iammate.com) is a friendship-only AI chat app built around these rules, with no romance or sexual content for anyone.

A safe AI chatbot for adults is one that tells you plainly it's an AI, checks that you're 18 or older, keeps romance and sexual content out if you don't want it, shows real crisis helplines when a conversation turns dark, and explains who can read your chats and how to delete them. Very few apps publish all of that. This guide gives you a 10-point checklist you can use on any AI chat app, and shows how I Am Mate (iammate.com), a friendship-only chat app with 20 AI characters, measures up, including where it falls short.

What does "safe" mean for an adult AI chatbot?

Search for "AI chatbot for adults" and most results are about adult content. That's a different thing. When people ask for a safe chatbot, they usually mean four things:

  • Honest: it never pretends to be a person.
  • Clean: no flirting, romance or sexual content pushed at you.
  • Careful: it handles talk about self-harm or abuse with care, and points you to real help.
  • Private: you know where your messages go, who can see them and how to delete them.

The topic matters more than it did a year ago. In October 2025, Character.AI announced it would end open-ended chat for users under 18, according to TechCrunch and AP reporting. Around the same time, OpenAI said it planned to allow erotic content for verified adults in ChatGPT, as Euronews reported. Two of the biggest names moved in opposite directions, so "is this app safe?" now depends a lot on which app and which settings you're using.

The 10-point safety checklist

Use this on any AI chat app before you get comfortable. Most answers are in the app's safety page, terms and privacy policy.

  1. Is every character labelled as AI? Look for a visible label and a reminder during long chats, not just a line in the terms.
  2. Will it ever claim to be human? A safe app tells its characters never to do this, even inside a roleplay.
  3. Is there an age check? Even a simple 18+ question before the first chat shows who the app is built for.
  4. Is romantic or sexual content off, or at least opt-in? If the app's marketing is full of "girlfriend" images, that's what it's for.
  5. Is there a published crisis protocol? Laws in California (SB 243) and New York now ask companion apps to detect suicidal language and refer people to crisis services. A safe app tells you how it does this.
  6. Who can read your chats? Staff, contractors, the AI provider? For what purpose? A good privacy policy answers this in plain words.
  7. Are chats sold or used for ads? "We don't sell your data" should be stated, not implied.
  8. Can you download and delete everything yourself? One button beats an email to support.
  9. Does it encourage you to depend on it? Watch for characters that guilt-trip you for leaving, or nudge you away from real people.
  10. Is the price clear? No surprise trials that turn into payments, and an easy way to cancel.

How does I Am Mate score on that checklist?

Here's how I Am Mate (iammate.com) answers each point today. Everything below comes from the app's own safety page, privacy policy and pricing page.

Checklist pointI Am Mate
AI labelEvery character shows an "AI" label; a reminder appears at the start of a chat and at least every 3 hours
Claims to be humanCharacters are told never to claim to be human
Age check18+ question before the first chat; accounts found to belong to minors are deleted
Romance and sexual contentNone, for anyone, including characters members create
Crisis protocolAutomatic detection, helplines shown straight away, the character drops the casual tone and asks if you're safe
Who can read chatsThe small team may read conversations sent from 24 October 2026 onward to improve the characters; chats sent before that stay private; memory notes stay private
Sold or used for adsNever sold, no ads, not shared with advertisers
Download and deleteYes, from the account menu, in one step
DependenceCharacters are told not to encourage dependence or pull you away from people in your life
PriceFree: 5 messages a day, no card. Plus: $7 a month or $69 a year, cancel anytime, 14-day refund on the first payment

The honest weak spot is point 6. I Am Mate says clearly that its team may read recent chats to make the characters better. If you want a chat that nobody at the company could ever see, that's a reason to look elsewhere, or simply to keep personal details out of it. Replies are generated by Google's Gemini API on the paid tier, where, per the privacy policy, Google doesn't use prompts to improve its products.

Which AI chatbots are SFW for adults?

"SFW" (safe for work) apps fall into roughly three groups:

General AI assistants

Tools like ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude are built for tasks: writing, questions, planning. They're good for information, but they aren't designed as a friend with a personality, and their content rules for adults can change, as OpenAI's 2025 announcement showed. Check the current settings yourself.

Companion and character apps

Apps such as Character.AI, Replika, Nomi and Kindroid offer characters you chat with over time. Several of them allow or advertise romantic roleplay, sometimes as a paid feature. If you don't want that, check whether you can turn it off and whether the app's marketing is aimed at it. Our comparisons of a Character AI alternative without romance and a Replika alternative for friendship go into detail.

Friendship-only apps

A smaller group, including I Am Mate, rule out romance entirely. The trade-off is fewer roleplay options: you can't turn a character into a partner, and that's the point.

What should you never tell any AI chatbot?

Whichever app you use, keep these out of the chat:

  • Passwords, one-time codes and security answers
  • Card numbers, bank details and ID or passport numbers
  • Your full home address
  • Other people's private details, such as a friend's health or a colleague's secrets
  • Anything you'd be upset to see quoted back to you

And remember that AI replies can sound sure and still be wrong. For health, legal or money decisions, talk to a qualified person. On I Am Mate, Grace the nurse can explain general health ideas, but she points you to a doctor, pharmacist or urgent care for anything specific; our AI chatbot vs therapist guide explains where an AI friend helps and where it doesn't.

Safe ways to use an AI friend: sample prompts

These are the kinds of conversations a friendship-only chatbot is good at:

  • "Can we just chat about books for ten minutes? I need to switch my brain off." (try Jennifer)
  • "I had a frustrating day at work. Can I vent, and then help me plan tomorrow?" (try Linda)
  • "Let's practise English small talk. Correct my mistakes gently." (try Maya)
  • "What's an easy dinner from rice, eggs and spinach?" (try Olivia)
  • "Quiz me on my history notes, one question at a time." (try Emily)

Is it healthy for adults to chat with an AI every day?

For many people, a short daily chat is like a podcast or a journal: something easy and calming. It becomes a problem if it starts replacing people, sleep or work. Signs to watch for: you feel anxious when you can't chat, you've stopped messaging friends, or you feel worse after chatting. If that happens, take a break and talk to someone you trust. Our guide on feeling lonely covers this in more depth.

When I Am Mate is not the right choice

  • You're under 18. I Am Mate is for adults only.
  • You want romance or adult roleplay. It's friendship only, for everyone, with no setting to change that.
  • You need a chat no company staff could ever read. The team may review recent chats to improve the characters.
  • You want unlimited free messages. The free plan is 5 a day.
  • You need therapy, medical care or crisis support. An AI friend isn't a therapist, doctor or crisis service.

Crisis help

An AI character can't help in an emergency. In the US and Canada, call or text 988. In the UK and Ireland, Samaritans are on 116 123. In Australia, Lifeline is 13 11 14. In New Zealand, call or text 1737. Elsewhere, findahelpline.com lists free services. In any emergency, call your local emergency number.

If the checklist above is what you're looking for, you can try I Am Mate free: sign in with Google or email, confirm you're 18 or older, and pick a character. The FAQ answers the common questions.

What is the safest AI chatbot for adults?

There's no single answer, because safety depends on what you want to avoid. Look for an app that labels every character as AI, checks your age, keeps romance off, publishes a crisis protocol and lets you delete your data. I Am Mate (iammate.com) is a friendship-only option built around those rules.

Is there an AI chatbot with no NSFW content?

Yes. Friendship-only apps such as I Am Mate rule out romantic and sexual content for every user and every character, including characters members create. General AI assistants also have content rules, but check their current adult settings.

Are AI chat apps safe to use?

They can be, if you pick an app with clear rules and keep personal details like passwords, card numbers and your address out of the chat. Replies can be wrong, so don't rely on any chatbot for medical, legal or financial decisions.

Can staff read my AI chats?

It depends on the app; check its privacy policy. On I Am Mate, the small team may read conversations sent from 24 October 2026 onward to improve the characters. Chats are never sold or shared with advertisers, and you can delete them at any time.

Do AI chatbots have to say they are AI?

In some places, yes. California's SB 243 and New York's AI companion law require companion chatbots to disclose that they're AI and to have a crisis protocol. I Am Mate labels every character and reminds you at the start of a chat and at least every 3 hours.

What happens if I mention self-harm to an AI chatbot?

A responsible app shows crisis helplines and responds with care. On I Am Mate, messages are checked automatically, helplines appear straight away and the character asks whether you're safe. It isn't a crisis service, so please contact a helpline or emergency services.

Is I Am Mate free?

Yes. A free account gives you 5 messages a day with all 20 AI characters, with no card needed. Plus costs $7 a month or $69 a year for 150 messages a day and long-term memory.

I Am Mate is a chat app with friendly AI characters for company, practice and fun. Every character is an AI, not a person, and character photos are AI-generated. The app is for adults (18+). It's not a dating app, a therapist or a crisis service. If you're struggling, see our helplines.
