I Am Mate is a chat app where you text with friendly AI characters, each with their own job, hobbies and personality, such as Jennifer the bookworm, Jack the gym and gaming buddy, Olivia the chef and Maya the English practice partner. It's for fun, company and practice.

No. Every character is an AI, labelled "AI", and the app reminds you at the start of a chat and at least every 3 hours that you're talking to an AI. Characters are told never to claim to be human.

No. I Am Mate is friendship only: no romance, flirting, dating roleplay or sexual content, for anyone. See the acceptable use policy.

Adults 18 and over. We ask your date of birth before your first chat. Companion chatbots may not be suitable for some minors.

I Am Mate works in any modern web browser, on phones and computers, worldwide, including the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Ireland. The app is in English.

No. I Am Mate runs in your browser at iammate.com. You can add it to your home screen for an app-like experience.

Yes. Maya is a patient English practice partner who chats about anything and adds a short tip when you make a mistake.

Yes. A free account includes 40 messages a day with all 20 built-in characters, and no card is needed.

Plus costs $7.99 a month or $59 a year (about $4.92 a month). It adds 200 messages a day, long-term memory, longer conversations in context and up to 10 characters of your own.

Our payment provider is the merchant of record and adds sales tax, VAT or GST where required. The final total is shown at checkout before you pay.

Prices are set in US dollars. Your bank or card converts the amount to your currency.

Our reseller, our payment provider, is the merchant of record. They process the payment and handle tax, and their name appears on your statement. We never see your full card details.

Open the chat, go to "Manage plan" and cancel. You keep Plus until the end of the period you paid for and won't be charged again.

Yes. You get a full refund within 14 days of your first payment, no questions asked. If a renewal surprised you and you haven't used Plus since, ask within 7 days. See the refund policy.

You can chat again the next day (limits reset at midnight UTC), or upgrade to Plus for 200 messages a day.

No. We don't read your chats, sell your data or use your chats for ads. Our admin tools only show counts and billing, never chat text.

Third-party AI models (currently Google Gemini), accessed through their paid APIs. I Am Mate is an independent app, not affiliated with or endorsed by Google or any other AI provider.

With Plus, each character keeps a few short notes about you (your name, interests, what's going on in your life) so later chats feel personal. You can read the notes and clear them at any time.

Yes. You can clear a chat, clear a character's memory notes, download your data, or delete your account and all chats in one click from the chat app.

Crisis helplines appear straight away, and the character responds with care, asks whether you're safe and encourages you to contact a helpline or someone you trust. Nobody reads your messages to do this. Our full protocol is on the safety page.

No. I Am Mate isn't a therapist, doctor or crisis service, and AI replies can be wrong. If you're struggling, talk to someone you trust or a professional.

Use the contact page and include the character's name and roughly when it happened. We reply within 2 business days.
