Is it safe to talk to an AI chatbot? A privacy and safety checklist

Do AI chatbots read your messages? Can they leak your data? A practical checklist for using AI chat apps safely, written for readers in the US, UK, Canada and Australia.
"Is it safe to talk to an AI?" is one of the most searched questions about chatbots, and it's a good one to ask. The honest answer: it can be, if you pick a careful app and follow a few simple habits. This guide covers what happens to your messages, the real risks, and a checklist you can use with any AI chat app.
What happens to your messages?
When you send a message in an AI chat app, it usually goes on a short journey:
- Your message is sent to the app's server over an encrypted connection (HTTPS).
- The app adds the character's description, safety rules and recent chat history.
- That bundle goes to an AI model provider (for example Google, OpenAI or Anthropic) through their API, and the reply comes back.
- The app stores the conversation so you can see it later and on other devices.
So the questions that matter are: who stores your chats, for how long, who can read them, and are they used for anything else? A trustworthy app answers those questions in plain language in its privacy policy.
On I Am Mate, for example, we don't read your chats, don't sell your data and don't use your chats for ads. Our team's admin tools only show counts and billing, never chat text. Replies are written by third-party AI models through their paid APIs. You can download your data, or delete your account and every chat, in one click. The details are in our privacy policy.
The real risks (and how to avoid them)
1. Oversharing personal details
The biggest risk is usually what we choose to type. Treat an AI chat like a semi-private space, not a vault.
- Never share passwords, bank or card numbers, Social Security or National Insurance numbers, passport details or one-time codes.
- Avoid full home addresses, and details about other people that they wouldn't want shared.
- It's fine to say "I have a job interview on Friday"; you don't need to name the company and your manager.
2. Wrong or made-up answers
AI models can sound confident and still be wrong. Use AI chats for conversation, ideas and practice, not for medical, legal, financial or safety decisions. Check anything important with a qualified person or an official source.
3. Emotional dependence
Some apps are designed to keep you hooked, with guilt-tripping, paid "gifts" or romantic pressure. A healthier app does the opposite: it reminds you it's an AI, encourages your real-world relationships and never pressures you to stay. On I Am Mate, characters are told not to encourage you to depend on them or pull away from the people in your life.
4. Scams and fake "AI" apps
Be wary of apps that ask for payment before you can see what you're buying, hide their pricing, have no contact details or legal pages, or ask you to move the conversation to another platform. A legitimate app shows who runs it, how to contact them, its prices and its refund policy.
5. Age-inappropriate content
Companion chatbots aren't suitable for every age. Look for an age check and clear rules about content. I Am Mate is for adults 18+, and has no romance or adult content for anyone.
Safety checklist for any AI chat app
- ✅ Clear "AI" labels, and reminders that you're not talking to a person

- ✅ A way to download and delete your data
- ✅ A published crisis protocol, with helplines shown if you mention self-harm
- ✅ An age check and a clear acceptable use policy
- ✅ Visible pricing, a refund policy and an easy way to cancel
- ✅ Real contact details and the name of the business that runs it
You can check ours: safety and crisis protocol, privacy, acceptable use, refunds and contact.
What the law says
Privacy and AI rules differ by country. In the UK and the EU, data protection law (UK GDPR and GDPR) gives you the right to access and delete your data. In California, the CCPA gives similar rights. New York and California also have specific laws for AI companion chatbots, covering AI disclosure and crisis referrals. We summarised them in AI companion chatbot laws in New York and California.
Frequently asked questions
Do AI chatbots read your messages?
The AI model processes your message to write a reply, but that is automatic. Whether people at the company can read your chats depends on the app. I Am Mate's team does not read chats, and our admin tools only show counts and billing.
Can an AI chatbot steal your information?
A chatbot can't take information you don't type. The risk is oversharing: never type passwords, card numbers, government ID numbers or one-time codes into any chat app.
Are my AI chats private?
They're private from other users, but stored by the app and processed by its AI provider. Read the privacy policy to see how long chats are kept and whether you can delete them. On I Am Mate you can download your data or delete your account and chats at any time.
Is it safe to tell an AI about my feelings?
Talking through your day can feel good, and a careful app will respond kindly. But an AI is not a therapist or a crisis service. If you're struggling, talk to someone you trust or contact a helpline such as 988 in the US and Canada or Samaritans on 116 123 in the UK and Ireland.
Can AI chatbots give wrong information?
Yes. AI models can be confidently wrong or make things up. Double-check anything important with a reliable source or a qualified professional.
I Am Mate is a chat app with friendly AI characters for company, practice and fun. Every character is an AI, not a person, and the app is for adults (18+). It's not a dating app, a therapist or a crisis service. If you're struggling, see our helplines.
